EXCURSIONS
The Province of Teramo organises free excursions by coach with tourist guide. The most popular destinations in the picturesque Teramo area of Abruzzo are:
CASTELLI
A gem within the Gran Sasso-Monti della Laga National Park, famous for its production of ceramics. Since the 15th century master potters have made it known all over the world. The Ceramics Museum, the Institute of Art and the church of San Donato, with its 15th century majolica ceiling defined by Carlo Levi as "the Sistine chapel of majolica" are all worth visiting, together with the innumerable workshops where pottery is produced and painted by hand and where you can buy high quality examples of craftsmanship.
Civitella del Tronto and its Spanish Fortress
The Spanish Fortress in Civitella, a monumental architectural construction, was the last Bourbon bulwark to fall to the troops from Piemonte in 1861, while Italy was undergoing unification. In 1970 restoration work began to restore it to its original splendour. The village of Civitella is also very attractive.
Colonnella Regina della Val Vibrata
A charming town, situated in a privileged panoramic position from which one can discern the Adriatic Coast from San Benedetto del Tronto up to Pescara. It is called the Piazza di Spagna of Abruzzo due to the grandeur and beauty of the steps leading up to the historic centre. Its historic palaces, old streets and famous balconies are of incomparable charm.
Il Gran Sasso of Italy
Does not need any presentation. Called “The Sleeping Giant” because when looked at from the level plane it resembles one, it splurges the highest peak of the Apennines with its Great Horn 2192 m high.
The Sanctuary of San Gabriele, the patron saint of Abruzzo.
Lies at the foot of the Gran Sasso in an evocative setting. Seating 12,000, each year it receives millions of pilgrims, above all from central and southern Italy. It is an example of modern sacred architecture. It is also possible to visit the old sanctuary.
Giulianova Alta
is the historic part of the city. It has characteristic old streets and small squares and one may reach it on foot from the Lido by climbing up the Monte Grappa steps, an ancient route, recently restored, which still retains the old washing troughs where housewives one went to do their washing. At the centre of the panoramic main piazza stands the statue of Vittorio Emanuele the Second, who stopped in the city to rest during his journey to Teano for the historic meeting with Garibaldi. An anecdote relates that a local cried out: "Your Majesty is a thief". The surprised king did not have rime to react before the bold man added: "because you have stolen the hearts of the townspeople of Giulianova". In Giulianova Alta there is also the Sanctuary to the Madonna dello Splendore, which has a spring whose water is part of popular cult. It is indeed related that the church was constructed after the Madonna appeared no less than three times to a commoner called Bertolino.
Day trips are also possible to Aquila, Assisi, Cascia, San Giovanni Rotondo and Rome, linked to Giulianova by a scheduled bus service running six times a day.
